3 Tips For Maternity and Newborn Photos

Lifestyle, Maternity, Newborn

When is a good time to start planning your maternity and newborn photo session? Your growing belly and your baby’s arrival are moments you’ll always treasure. So, let’s talk about how to prepare for documenting these exciting milestones in your life.

Tip 1: Maternity Session Timing

I recommend scheduling your maternity session to take place when you are between 30 and 34 weeks pregnant. This window of time is ideal because you aren’t at the point where you’re feeling too uncomfortable.

Tip 2: What to Wear

Dresses are perfect for maternity sessions because they are flowy and showcase your beautiful bump. If you’re up for it, you can bring along another dress or outfit as well. Many of my clients opt to have their hair and make-up done professionally and the results turn out amazing. I’m a huge fan of you taking some time for a little extra pampering!

As we know, babies make their entrance when they are ready! As we plan for your newborn’s session, I will block out a tentative window of time to come and meet your newest family member.

Tip 3: Newborn Session Photos

I like to photograph newborns during their first 10 days of life. This time frame works well because babies are sleepy, cuddly and tend to be pretty cooperative.

I have a photojournalistic style that highlights interactions between you and your baby as they unfold. Here’s what you can expect from our time together: I will come to your home and photograph your sweet baby, your new family together, nursery shots, and candid moments. I plan for a couple of hours of time to allow for feeding, diaper changes, etc. Don’t worry about cleaning the house, you just had a baby! All I need is a room with nice window light!

Do you use props? This is a question I’m asked often. My answer: Yes! I will include them as you wish. However, don’t feel pressure to have them. Newborn sessions are beautiful with or without props. My style is candid which means I’ll spend more time photographing you and your baby cuddling and less time posing. Over the years, I’ve included many creative props from clients’ home such as: blocks with baby’s name, neutral swaddle blankets, pretty headbands and cute hats, a felt letter board with baby’s birth info, loose flowers, pets, and more. For baby clothing, Reverie Threads has some adorable finds: diaper covers, headbands, trendy baby body suits … check them out here!
